Leica X1 First Impressions
|
March, 2010 |
Reviewer: Dale T. From SC US
When I took the camera out of the box I was dreading that it might look or feel lightweight, or otherwise less than what I'd expect for $2000 U.S. Was I ever surprised. It was like removing a fine piece of jewelry, like a Rolex watch, from its case. And like a Rolex, very solid, elegant, manly even (no offense to any reviewers who felt that it wasn't as "manly" as the M-series cameras.)
I don't have anything new to add as far as image quality goes - the other reviews cover that pretty well. I didn't have any problems with the controls - the dials on top are tight enough, although you can bump them out of place if you aren't at least a little bit careful. The wheels on the back, along with the buttons and menu system, are wonderful - nothing less.
This is a very different type of camera from a typical compact with zoom lens and etc. - with this camera you go out with a very different approach, and just see what you get. Or you could take the X1 along with a pocket super-zoom like the Canon 212, just in case you want to switch shooting styles.
I haven't had a "real" Leica since 2002 when I traded my M6 film camera for a digital camera. I don't regret that decision, but I sure feel a whole lot better now that I have a real Leica digital camera.
